A large part of our life as Benedictines involves prayer. Ora
et labora (prayer and work) is Benedictine spirituality in a nutshell. Each Brother,
Sister and Oblate prays individually as well as joining together to pray as a community
regularly (Holy Family Priory also prays the Vesperal Liturgy every Wednesday night and
Midday Office at the conclusion of every monthly meeting).
In our personal prayer time we also make Bible reading, lectio divina and praying
the rosary and prayer rope (the Jesus Prayer) a part of our prayer life, but by far the
most unifying and regular prayer we practice (both separately and together) is the Divine
Office. The monks, Sisters and Oblates are united in this practice.
This devotion has become very popular for use by lay people. You can be sure that
somewhere in the world, at every moment of the day, someone is praying the Office. What
power! What unity in the Body of Christ! What glory is being given to God as we pray using
His own words from Scripture! We encourage you to join us in this ancient, powerful and
unifying means of prayer.
The Sisters of the Holy Family Priory prays the four-fold Divine Offices of Matins, Midday
Prayer, Vespers and Compline, around which we center our spiritual lives. We pray that you
will find in this ancient and beautiful method of prayer a new delight in praising the
Lord, and encourage you to join us as often as you can. Our prayers, united together with
those of the entire Church, are offered as a sweet-smelling incense before God.
